obon sushi sits in the mccormick ranch area of scottsdale, a ground-up restaurant building for a client expanding from successful tucson and scottsdale quarter locations. rather than repeat those interiors, the project carries their eclectic character into a new shell designed around watching food being made.

the kitchen is the organizing move. it opens fully to the dining room, with sushi bar seating pulled up close enough that preparation becomes part of the meal. custom furniture, art, and layered lighting do the atmospheric work, keeping the architecture itself quiet so the room reads as collected rather than designed.

one long wall is a run of glass garage doors. rolled up, they join the dining room to a generous patio and roughly double the usable seating for most of the scottsdale year, letting the restaurant swing between an intimate interior in summer and an open pavilion in the cooler months.
